How to Replace an audi keys replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, audi lost key it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's an essential component of your audi a5 key fob's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points.
