In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or audi car key replacement a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're cheap and nearby easy to find, especially if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi connect key since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a common feature across the audi key fob not working 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
