The item upgrade allows players to boost the gear rating of an item by up to 700 points and give it a bonus. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you take them to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading due to their unique stats. (For instance the perfect rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items, like weapons aren't changed much after an upgrade and therefore aren't worth it.

Weapons

To upgrade your armor, go to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four fountains in all and each one requires you to complete a specific side quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. Once you've completed the primary side quest and completed the fountain that corresponds you'll be able to talk to any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrading menu.

Each piece of armor can be upgraded to three levels and the amount of material and Rupees needed for each level will differ. In general, you'll need at anywhere between three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees for the initial upgrade, and then anywhere from five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent one. For example the Champion Leathers could be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep pace with a decent-sized group of adversaries in most cold environments and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded to +20 defense, providing you enough protection to survive a full on raid with a handful of friends.

It isn't possible to upgrade armor the same as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior, you should focus on upgrading your armor for physical strength or spell power. It's also worth saving your armor upgrades for the armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield or the helmet you use for the final boss fight and the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.
