How to Replace an audi a3 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at the Bosch sensor, like ours. 5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi new key since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
