The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept in removing hair from dogs. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our top option. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology and is therefore prone to become entangled in shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also extremely quiet and can be used when you're at work or at school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with an auto-emptying dock, however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with a self-emptying bin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best automatic vacuum and mop robot hoover for carpets, though it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste, and it also learns the layout of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. It has a battery life that is comparable to other models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a room with carpet to prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is perfect for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming, a feature that we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' compact models This mop and robot vacuum is among the most attractive designs in our tests. The latest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work, or in the evening when you are trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that is very efficient, but it's going to cost you more and produce more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that will let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and washes and dries the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vac works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot vacuums with mop to clean one particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you own a number of furniture. For families with busy schedules recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would imagine from its price. It does a stellar job cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've examined. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured application and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, arrange an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app offers a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has strong suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for hair of pets. You can also organize a spot-cleaner which will thoroughly clean an area.
