titration for adhd

A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a thorough evaluation of your ADHD. This will include medical history and an assessment using the standard ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.

After your evaluation, you will be advised whether medication may be beneficial in your case. This will take place during your follow-up appointment (which could be in person via video link or via phone). Your clinician will discuss the various options for medications available. If you decide to start taking medication, we will offer you the opportunity to increase your dosage to optimize the benefits/side-effects balance for you.

This is a process which can take several weeks and involves adjusting your child's medication gradually until the appropriate balance is achieved. It is not unusual to need to adjust two or three medicines before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It's important for parents to participate in this titration process, and keep an eye on their child's behaviour to let the doctor know if the medicine is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be issued with an individual prescription that you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You'll be required to attend every six months to check your medication - this includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the evaluation is completed after the assessment is completed, you can make appointment with the psychiatrist. The appointment is typically conducted by video conference using zoom. However, in certain instances, it could be possible for an audio-only appointment to be scheduled (again at an additional cost).

At this point, we will discuss any treatment options and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration plan. This will include an assessment of your medication dose and an examination of any side effects you might be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 via telephone or video consultation. Costs for medication are extra and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The doctor will also ask you about your family history and the impact that your ADHD symptoms impact your life, as well as any issues with your relationships that you may be having or other mental health problems that you might be experiencing. ADHD can be a hereditary condition, so it's important to assess your family history in order to determine if you are at risk of developing this disorder.

During this assessment it is essential that you are truthful and honest with the clinician, as they will be using the information you provide to determine if you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is an important step, as the wrong diagnosis can lead to inappropriate medication prescription.

If you decide to be treated for ADHD we'll schedule an appointment to follow-up with a psychiatrist who specializes in this area. This can be done at the time of your diagnosis if you are keen to begin treatment right away or within two weeks if you prefer to take time to consider the implications of your diagnosis and the possibilities available to you.

If you're not sure what your preference is We suggest you talk to your GP before booking your private appointment as certain providers have different rules regarding whether they require a GP referral letter or not. We also advise to check if your GP accepts a "Shared Care Agreement', which means that after you have been discharged from the clinic, you will be referred back to them for the prescription for the medication.

Medication

Medication is a key element of the process for many people who are looking for an official ADHD diagnosis. It isn't always easy to obtain a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long, and GPs can be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

One method to circumvent this is to request your GP to refer you through Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). You can pick a provider that offers a private assessment service and the titration. This will help you reduce time and be more convenient, especially when you are on a tight work schedule.

If you are identified as a candidate for this treatment, your chosen clinician will evaluate you and determine whether or not you need to be titrated on medication. You will need to complete forms that are different for each provider but the most frequent ones are self-reporting questions and medical histories that go to childhood and adulthood. These will help your clinician identify any conditions that could indicate that you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication if prescribed.

If you are titrated, the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and nonstimulant medicines. These will be carefully assessed and monitored to determine the best combination for you. The titration process can be long and could require several additional appointments before you're able to stay on your dose.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend on the type and amount of medication you are taking. They can be scheduled for monthly or quarterly. Your physician will make sure whether you are stable on the medication, record any side effects that you've experienced and make any necessary adjustments to ensure you remain on a dose that is safe. You will also be required to attend a regular health check which can include blood pressure, pulse and weight readings and an annual check-up.

However, for those who require further discussion about their titration adhd adults and treatment plans, it's possible that they will be referred back to the same private clinic that performed their initial assessment. If this happens, the titration appointment will be part of their consultation fee and they will receive their medication on a private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This can cost more than an NHS prescription as the pharmacy will charge for the medication.coe-2022.png
