Origins

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase its development model appears to be changing. Those who are appalled by the enormous cost of the old system are urging an extensive program of liberalization in capital, labor, and product markets. On the other hand those who support the old system want to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and exaggerating fears of job loss.

Academics and analysts are divided on the extent to which Korea's development is influenced by these two trends. This article examines developments to date by analyzing five phases of the country's political evolution: democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and participatory democracy (2002 to present). This article also identifies some key factors that seem to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey in 2009 found that nearly one third of respondents do not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they did not know what it meant. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States, where a similar percentage of people are not convinced that humans evolved from earlier forms of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and in bringing them to Christ. An increase in interest in creation science came in 1980, with an all-day seminar that was held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the keynote speakers. This event was attended by an audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The success of the event resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31st, 1980. The event was widely covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles on the scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR and some books on the subject that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

A KACR success was witnessed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, there were enough students fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support needed to build a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine called CREATION. The magazine covers a variety of topics in the creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has local branches that conduct seminars and provide talks to schoolchildren and community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter part of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. The economic crisis has formed Korea's new development paradigm. The primary challenge for the new regime is to strike a balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the development of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He controlled a part of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He became an adversary to Goguryeo.

124_1-back-light.jpgHis rule was however only for a short time. After Gungye's defeat, he was overthrown by a powerful local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as an heir state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the central government system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. From that point on the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
