Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a fantastic source of extra damage, more AD or even more attachments.

Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components within them by with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage an armored piece or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the extent of its upgrades. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase as it is upgraded to the highest upgrade level. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it should be heavier.

There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different effect. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade an item upgrader kit can receive, as shown below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades also require fees for use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges for these upgrades refresh every day or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

The majority of upgrades to weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade for applying. These are obtained through either finishing side quests, killing a certain number of bosses or monsters, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.

The quality of a diamond can be improved by the Jeweler, with stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Based on the level of the gem, it will provide a different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

All kinds of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a sufficient level to obtain them. Jewels can be replaced by another one without damaging the original. However, you can only replace one jewel in an equipment piece only once.

It is common to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

In addition to the above-mentioned upgrades players can also obtain glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost in power and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Crystal. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis, cannot be swapped out, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character various small, but beneficial benefits. They are available in the start-up area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained through vendors and after doing road interaction. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak, which grants a small but useful bonus to speed of movement and evasion. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar manner as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be put into any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and may also help to compensate for the absence of a solid team or any talent tree slots which would normally be filled with the hero's best stats.

As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace anytime soon. Next, any items that have desirable statistics are less significant than the iLevel for the item Upgrade to be upgraded. This is true especially if you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item. It is best to upgrade just one crucial stat rather than two suboptimal ones.
