How to Replace an Audi car Key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.
