Energy Efficiency
Built-in microwave ovens are a great option for those with smaller kitchens in their home or apartment. They can save space in cabinets that would be taken up by separate appliances, and can also help reduce energy consumption. They usually provide the most efficient cooking method than traditional wall ovens, because they use less energy. They can also be used to cook food and warm dishes, which reduces the requirement for additional appliances such as toasters or warming plates.
When evaluating possible amendments to energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses which include assessment of technology and market conditions, screening analysis, engineering analysis and a national impact analysis (NIA). In this SNOPR DOE will use its existing engineering analysis on microwave ovens to determine what level of efficiency improvements are feasible for this product type.
In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave with an energy performance set of objectives. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.
As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the impacts on consumers for every product category including lifecycle cost savings and simple payback periods ("PBP"). DOE will employ its Government Regulatory Impact Model with an adaptation for microwave ovens to calculate the industry's net present value ("NPV").
The impact of manufacturers will be assessed also, and DOE will use a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model adapted for this type of product to calculate the manufacturing NPV. In addition, DOE will consider the potential impact on small integrated microwave business manufacturers and other manufacturer subgroups to identify any that could be disproportionately affected by these proposals.
DOE will also consider whether the test procedure for microwave ovens has to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption and an 25 litre integrated microwave energy use metric. The current test procedures only include standby mode power consumption.
Design
Microwaves produce heat by causing water molecules vibrate in food. Wall ovens rely upon the circulation of hot air while microwaves rely on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall units combine these two appliances into a single unit, which is ideal for securing space in the kitchen and giving a modern, sleek look. But you need to carefully think about your needs and budget before purchasing a combination wall oven. Some of the ovens we reviewed have design or performance issues.
