World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.
Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high dependent on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is because of how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.
Item level is a popular measurement of power and is visible on all item tooltips. It also serves as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.
Using the item level can help players evaluate the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it's capable of causing. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when evaluating the inventory of a vendor.
The item level can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its level. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are several theories about how the item level is determined. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated using an equation that determines the value of the stats of an item really are. It is based on the fact that different benefits are valued differently and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This can result in a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzard's real item level.
However, this isn't the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, since the level of the region the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an additional level to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.
Item Stats
The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in various ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat modifications of an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by the player's level.
Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats on the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time however, items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.
Affixes are a different method to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can do things like give the item extra damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting an exclusive name to the item.
Presently, all affixes are able to be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button using the arrows that circle. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.
In addition to rerolling affixes, players can also choose which stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within that range, unless it's a unique item or the result of a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to boost. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats gained or lost at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the likelihood of locating items, the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a possibility to obtain better equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more valuable in the early game than in later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level of the item and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.
Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that deals damage by five percent. These items are available at the store, or they can be constructed using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade item or to prevent players from losing their item if it does not work.
When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The chance of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..
The Luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item upgrade has an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.
The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This could cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
