How to Replace an audi key fob replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

suzuki-logo.jpgIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of an Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your car. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points.
