World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.
Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade item increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its base stats are increased in value. This is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly depending on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that need to be altered to upgrade an item.
The level of an item is a widely used measurement of power and can be seen on all tooltips of items. It is also used to limit how much PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at lower levels. The average item level can be found in the character sheet.
When deciding whether to buy or sell gear, players can compare the levels of the item. It's an indicator of the item's damage and its quality. The level of an item can be used to compare items when evaluating the inventory of a vendor.
On PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete description of the item, as well as its value. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and entering /itemlevel into chat.
There are several theories on how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory states that the item level is calculated using formulas that determine the value of the stats of an item really are. It is based on the fact that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl calculated, which is typically very close to Blizzard's actual item level.
However, this isn't the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, as the size of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have a higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to a single weapon and to motivate players to explore other weapons. The base stats of a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat mods which are then boosted by the player's level.
Upgrades to an item may increase the stats of an item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item, for example, will only be upgraded once, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded several times at higher costs.
Another method to alter the stats on an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can provide the item extra damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.
All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold and other items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other options for rerolling.
In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within that range, unless it is an exclusive item or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could be changed by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or deciding which stats to increase. Like base equipment, it would have to be done per item and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats at once.
Item Luck
A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries and the properties that are spawned from loot drops, and the intensity of the properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items (relevant resource site). It merely gives players the possibility to obtain better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs than in later ones, since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains.
Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the item. They can also be increased by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to add another 40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Furthermore, certain items, such as the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available in the shop, or they can be constructed using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be costly and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item the rate of success is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The chance of success can only be increased so much, and the chance that an upgrade item will fail cannot exceed 100%.
The luck of an item can also affect the success of an upgrade. All items have a success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
