Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific stats. Each upgrade increases item upgrading level by 3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

The more modernized gear generally has a more value in trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level Upgrade level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item used for the upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

The cost of upgrades will be based on the current level of the gear being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. If you purchase a similar item, it will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons and tools, armor and accessories. They can be purchased by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. button, which will display an image of the item level upgrade at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and current item upgrading level, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item upgrade is upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Upgraders for items are available in many places including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a positive and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was tweaked a bit, with numerous new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a specific level for an item upgrader kit in an armor slot, upgrading other items to that same item level will cost less even if they are part of another set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players achieve certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading gear in WoW players have a few choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more special and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an integral component of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be used on equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading.
