Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

For example a weapon that has the upgrade template ending in % will gain 3% attack damage every time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons in order to give them a stat boost or an extra effect. They can be acquired through crafting, buying from vendors trading or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must have been at least upgraded to the blue level for a component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied only once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade item non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as other items that are not ascended. A 'boost' upgrade can alter the attack or defence attributes of a weapon, or armor. Leveling

The item upgrade system allows players to boost the stats of specific items by inserting upgraded components. This is known as "upping".
