World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is due to the number of perks that need to be altered to upgrade items an item.
It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It also serves as a gating requirement while waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is limited to the lower levels). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.
When deciding to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the level of an item. It's a sign of the item's condition and quality. The level of the item can be used to evaluate items when examining the inventory of a vendor.
On your PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the full item description, including its value. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are a variety of theories on the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory states that the item level is calculated using formulas that determine how valuable the stats of an item really are. It is based on the fact that different advantages are valued differently and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real item level.
This isn't the only factor that affects the ilvl of an item upgrade. The location of where the item was dropped may alter its stats. For instance, it could add a level to the item's haste or crit score. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item are a major element in what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the Best item upgrade." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modification which are then boosted by the player's level.
Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The rarity of an item determines its cost of upgrading. An item that is white or grey, for example, will only be upgraded one time however, items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.
Another way to change the stats of an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to give items additional damage or other special capabilities (such as revitalizing dead or reducing cooling downs), or to differentiate them by naming them.
All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade menu pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items, which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other rerolling options.
Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges of an item are determined by the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within that range, unless it's a unique item or the result of a God roll from a boss of a raid.
Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item level, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player can increase the likelihood of locating items and the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade gear earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Certain items, such as the weapon that is infused with hollow can also be crafted to increase the damage of any skill that causes damage by five percent. These items can be found in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade item failing can't be greater than 100%..
The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects can be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
