Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents snuggle with their infant at night without fear of SIDS. However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months when your baby will be required to move into a cot or moses basket.
Mehack, a MFM home tester, was impressed by the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used around the house. It also comes with an option to rock manually. It was easy to set up, and even came with a travel bag.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They also can be converted into toddler beds, whereas the cot beds are typically used up to three years old. There are two sizes of wooden cots - large and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or a cot. Choosing the larger of the two is a good option if you want your child to sleep in it until the age of at least three years old.
Jasmine is an MFM mum who tested the product at home, said she liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for the baby's room. She says that it is easy to lift the baby into and out of the cot during night feeds or for soothing, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are less sturdy.
Another home test subject, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the home, and it's rocking too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike other international or European brands. This means that you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When choosing a bedside cot be sure to choose one that can be raised up to a height that is comfortable for you when feeding babies. It should also be able to be lowered away from the way, so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is particularly useful when you're recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.
You should also think about the level you'd like the base of your crib to be. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of the standard Moses baskets at the lowest height, other mums prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option with one of our mum testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible side that you can press down at the touch of the button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should only be used until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance typically about 6 months. This is due to the danger of being suffocated. It is also important to remember that if you choose a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a cot, you will need to start removing the sides when your child is ready for this, so that they don't climb out or get out of the bed.
Design
There are many different styles of cribs for beds that range from basic to extravagant. The most luxurious models could include features such as a built-in nightlight and a calming centre that plays music and sounds and comes with two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or a swivelling base that allows you to get your baby bedside co sleeper's food in the right place. Some models can be transformed into the toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, which won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you pick up your newborn and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is great for new mums recovering from Caesarean births or who have to remain in bed for long periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, stating that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier particularly after her c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the best bedside cot for newborn Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's bigger than other bedside cribs that we've tested, but it folds into its travel bag to make it a small size when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and children. It is a fantastic design that is extremely maneuverable and is extremely durable. She said that the swivelling bassinet base was a great idea because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it is able to be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers who may still be recovering from a C-section. Find a model that lets you lower one side at the push of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of the bed. This is essential, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You should also not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as duvets and pillows, which could cause babies to become overheated.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues like gaps between the bedside travel cot sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside cot mattress sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. However, the CPSC found that these requirements are not feasible or effective to reduce the number of incidents where infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.
The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included foldable bedside crib sleepers with multiple uses which can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside beds to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets using an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as an actual bassinet.
The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
