Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months old, at which point your baby is ready to move to the bed.
MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model has a lift-off bassinet you can use around the house and an option to rock manually. It was simple to put together, and came with its own travel bag.
Size
Cots and cot beds differ in size, with cots being smaller than beds for cots. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while cot beds are generally only used for up to three years. older. There are two sizes of wooden bedside cot cots - large and standard, which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. The larger one is a good idea when you want your child to sleep in it until they reach +/- three.
Jasmine, an MFM mom who tried the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too large for the baby's room. It's easy to get her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing, and that the quality is great, compared with many she's seen that are flimsy.
Emily, another home tester, is awed by the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora - it is a portable, lift-off bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an option for inclining the reflux and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy a new mattress every time your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When selecting a cot for the bed choose one that can be elevated to a height that's comfortable for you to feed your baby. It must also be lowered out of the way, so that you can pull your baby to feed them at night or to soothe him. This is particularly useful when you are recovering from a C Section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.
You should also consider the level you'd like the base of your crib to be. While some mothers find it easier to lift their children out of traditional Moses baskets at the lowest height, other mums prefer a higher base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option with one of our mom testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible part that you can push down with the click of a button.
Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should only be used in the event that your baby can hold his head up with no assistance, which is typically at around 6 months. This is because of the possibility of being suffocated. It's also important to note that if you select a bedside or bassinet which can convert into a cot it is necessary to start removing the sides when your child is able to do this to ensure that they don't get out of bed or fall out of the bed.
Design
There are many styles of bedside crib and travel cot cribs, from basic to lavish. Some of the more extravagant options include features such as a built-in light or a center of calm that plays music and sound and has two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep. Another option is the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. Some models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example, won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you take your baby to the crib and move them to the opposite side of the crib without having to get out of the bed. This is ideal for new mums recovering from Caesarean births or who have to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried this product at home, stated that it was simple to use and made it easier to reach her baby, especially after having a c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and a rocking Bedside crib feature. It's bigger than other bedside cribs that we've tested, but it folds up into its travel bag to make it relatively compact when it's not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and children. It is a fantastic design that is extremely maneuverable and is extremely durable. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.
Safety
A bedside cot that is large and spacious's most important safety characteristic is the fact that it can be easily raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or their nappy. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from the C-section. It is recommended to choose a design which allows you to lower the sides of the bed by pressing a button. This allows you to lift your child without getting out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and becomes more mobile. You should also not add anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, like pillows and duvets, which can cause babies to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC found, however that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are entrapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses which can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different option to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside baby bed sleepers which would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be removed. Attachments can be permanently attached or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.
The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to be published in November 2021.
